So we may have been just a year too soon that year. That year, we were playing a lot of sophomores in our lineup. They made one and we had a chance at one, thought we got fouled at the end, but they said the foul came after the buzzer, so we ended up losing the game by 1 point, I believe it was. “Subsection final, we lost to Le Sueur-Henderson on a last-second shot. But in the 2003-2004 year, we had a really good team as well. “We went four years without doing it and I was thinking to myself, ‘Oh, man, maybe we’re going downhill here or something.’ We won the conference a few of those years, but we didn’t make it back to the state tournament. “The expectations were there, of course, to go back to state,” Biedenbender said. ![]() The Chargers also repeated that trip to state in 2006. Biedenbender and the Chargers broke through and achieved their goal in 2005, however, as they returned to state. The Chargers won three consecutive conference titles from 2001-03, but they did so without reaching the pinnacle that is the state tournament. That being said, we ended up making it to the section final against Springfield and we lost to them by maybe 6, 8 points in that game.” We ended up having a very good season, but unfortunately, Sarah Gronholz, one of our senior post players and one of our best players, tore her ACL in February of that year, so that really changed the trajectory of what we were going to be able to accomplish. “It was a great group of girls to work with, they were very helpful to me. “The expectations were huge coming in,” Biedenbender said. So it was a little intimidating at first, I’ve got to be honest, coming in not having coached high school for a few years and taking over a team that was expected, really, to go back to state again.”īiedenbender’s first team at MVL was without a couple of seniors from the year before in Hannah Enter and Heidi Madson, but most players were back and looking to get MVL back to state.Īmong those top returners that 2000-01 season were Sarah Gronholz, Erin Czer, Jessica Merseth and Leah Morgan. “So here I was taking over a team that had taken second in the state to Fosston and Kelly Roysland the year before. And I had done some high school basketball coaching in Wisconsin before at the freshman and JV levels, but I had never been a head varsity coach before. “So part of the position was head girls basketball coach. “I was a principal and grade school teacher in Overland Park, Kansas, at one of our Lutheran schools down there and I got a call to MVL to replace John Barenz, who went out to be a principal at Rocky Mountain Lutheran High School,” Biedenbender said. MVL’s first girls basketball team to make it to the state tourney came in 1994 under head coach Dave Ross.īarenz coached the MVL girls basketball team for four seasons and finished his last season with MVL in 2000 by coaching the team to a second-place finish in the 2000 Class A state tournament. The game is very competitive so stay focused and be careful not to let the opponent have a chance to score a goal in your half.Biedenbender, who grew up in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and graduated from MLC in 1988, first took over as head coach for the Chargers in place of John Barenz, who led the MVL girls to state in 2000.
